Currently the raised beds have either Barley or Oats growing in them at various stages based on how late they got planted. We put the seeds in each bed as we were able to get it full of dirt and logs.

A huge number of these plants are perennials that will likely give us nothing for a year or 2 and after that they will offer a perpetual source of food and medicinals that require very little work.

Pecan - Carya illinoinensis
Pinyon Pine - Pinus cembroides edulis
makes pine nuts (for Pesto)
Purple Pitcher Plant - FOR INSIDE it eats flies, each room of the house can easily feed one of these. .. pissed that we just learned it takes several years before they start eating flies.
Empress Tree - Paulownia tomentosa
the fastest growing hard wood in the world
reaches harvest height in 7 years and REGROWS from the stump up to 10 times.
We'll be propagating as many of these as we can in easily harvest-able locations. We hope to get enough of them that we can take a load out each year (starting in 7 years). The 1st set of these trees should provide a self sustaining income supplement to the family for 70 years or more. We hope to get the first batch out of pots and into the ground by summer's end.
Scarlet Runner Pole Bean
plant 3 or 4 at base of every established tree for permanent nitrogen fixing
this perennial bean is both beautiful and one of the heaviest producers of edible climber beans. we''l plant 3 or 4 at each tree expecting 1 or 2 to not make it through the 1st full year.
